Lead Application Operations Engineer – Document & Digital Evidence / Matching / Entity Resolution

Location: Liverpool / Darlington / Hybrid / Remote

Salary: £42,075 - £44,599

Contract: Permanent

Work pattern: Flexible working, Full-time, Part-time

Closing date: 4 August 2025, 10:00 am

Lead key digital systems that support safeguarding across the UK, from document handling to entity resolution.

This is an exciting time to join the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) as we modernise our technology platforms and strengthen the digital services that underpin safer recruitment.

We’re looking for a Lead Application Operations Engineer to take responsibility for a group of high-impact applications, including document and digital evidence management systems, matching and entity resolution services, and other supporting platforms. These systems play a vital role in how DBS processes information, supports investigations and delivers its statutory functions.

About the role

This newly created position sits within our Technology and Innovation Directorate and supports the wider programme to replace legacy platforms with a modern, cloud-first technology estate.

You’ll be responsible for the day-to-day performance, resilience and development of a set of applications that are critical to DBS operations. These systems are varied in nature but share a common purpose: supporting data-intensive, evidence-led decision making in complex, high-trust environments.

The role blends operational oversight with strategic input. That means managing live services, guiding application roadmaps, and working across teams to ensure each system develops in line with business needs and user expectations. You’ll collaborate closely with DevOps engineers, service owners, delivery teams and other application leads, contributing to an integrated and effective service model.

About you

You’ll bring experience of running and improving applications in a live service environment, with a good working knowledge of the kinds of platforms used to manage documents, evidence or data relationships. You should be comfortable with operational responsibility, proactive in identifying improvements, and confident working across teams to support delivery.

This is a role for someone who takes ownership. Someone who wants to help build reliable, resilient digital services that genuinely support safeguarding at scale.

Why choose a career at the Disclosure & Barring Service

At DBS, we are proud of the work we do and the people we work with. Our culture values collaboration, inclusion, and professionalism. We offer flexibility, trust and room to grow, recognising our people require support, not just responsibility.

Benefits include:

  • Civil Service pension with generous employer contributions
  • 25 days annual leave, rising to 30 days with service, plus public holidays
  • Flexible and hybrid working options, including remote working
  • A supportive and inclusive organisational culture
  • Ongoing learning and professional development opportunities

Remote working is available for this role. Office attendance (Liverpool or Darlington) may be required in accordance with business needs.

Closing date for applications is 4 August 2025, 10:00 am.
